OVERVIEW: 

NAS Patuxent River is home to Headquarters, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and to the Headquarters for Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD). In addition to these two organizations, there are 50 other tenant units and organizations at NAS Patuxent River. Today NAS Patuxent River has over 20,000 military and civilian personnel.

NAVAIR provides complete life-cycle support for naval aircraft, and aviation related weapons and systems for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. NAVAIR also provides specialized support services such as: aviation related systems research, design, and development, systems engineering, acquisition management, systems test and evaluation, development of training facilities and related systems, aircraft repair and modification, and the full spectrum of systems logistics support.

in St. Mary's County, Maryland
(about 65 miles southeast of
Washington D.C. )  

NAWCAD conducts research, development, engineering, test and evaluation of naval (Navy and Marine Corps) air vehicle systems and associated flight-related trainers. NAWCAD also manages the Navy's test facilities and ranges, research laboratories, and aircraft systems used to develop, test, and field aircraft. NAWCAD procures aircraft, avionics, air-launched weapons, electronic warfare systems, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, launch and arresting gear, training equipment and facilities, and aviation support equipment for the Navy and the Marine Corps.
