OVERVIEW: Keesler AFB has been designated as the Air Force's "Electronics Training Center of Excellence." The host unit of Keesler AFB is the 81st Training Wing. The 81st TW trains newly minted Airmen and military personnel from the other branches of service in a variety of technical skills they will use in their duties. The 81st TW trains more than 28,000 students (Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, federal civil service) each year across a broad spectrum of 400 courses covering 37 different career fields. Training programs include such diverse technical subjects as: electronics, meteorology, communication systems, computer systems, air traffic control, airfield management, command post operations, air weapons control, education and instructor training, precision measurement, financial management, and defense comptroller, manpower and personnel management, radar operations, and cyber training. Keesler also provides advanced training for military doctors, nurses, and technicians in numerous medical specialties. |

Another key unit at Keesler AFB is the 403rd Wing. The 403rd Wing is an Air Force Reserve tenant unit. The 403rd Wing is the parent unit to the famed "Hurricane Hunters." The 403rd Wing conducts tactical airlift missions, weather reconnaissance, and combat airlift support. The 403rd Wing has over 1,400 Air Force Reservists.
2nd Air Force manages nearly 2,700 active training courses. The annual student load for these courses totals over 150,000 students. These courses include technical training, basic military training, medical training, and distance learning courses. These training courses are conducted not only at Keesler AFB, but at many other locations such as: Goodfellow, Lackland, Sheppard, and Vandenberg Air Force Bases. In addition, 2nd AF manages 92 aircraft maintenance training programs at Air Force detachments worldwide.
Keesler AFB is also the home to the 85th Engineering Installation Squadron (EIS). The 85th EIS has nearly 200 Air Force personnel. The 85th EIS can design, engineer, and install computers and electronics equipment for expeditionary forces. The 85th EIS provides electromagnetic hazard and interference investigations for DoD. It also provide DoD forces with High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) protection.
