JBAB is the result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC). The BRAC recommended the consolidation of Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base.  JBAB is a 1,018-acre complex located on the shore of the Potomac River.

JBAB is home to Naval District Washington. There are nearly 17,000 military and civilian personnel at JBAB. These personnel support 48 military and federal agencies located on JBAB. The United States Air Force Honor Guard and Band and the Navy Ceremonial Guard at JBAB provide formal ceremonial support for the White House, senior DoD leadership, as well as senior military leadership in the Washington D.C. area.

Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling provides support to military and civilian employees and their families throughout the National Capital Region. This support includes: engineering, information technology, logistics, human resources, contracting and procurement, security, and morale, welfare and recreation services.
