Duties and Responsibilities - Federal Bureau of Prisons:  The BOP "provides progressive and humane care for federal inmates. BOP  professionalizes the prison service and ensures consistent and centralized administration of federal prisons."  BOP has prisons of various security levels and specialized missions throughout the country.

Locations and Types of Prisons Operated.  The majority of BOP employees work at one of 122 federal prisons located throughout the United States. These prisons are operated at five different security levels "in order to confine offenders in an appropriate manner."  "Security levels are based on such features as the presence of external patrols, towers, security barriers, or detection devices; the type of housing within the institution; internal security features; and the staff-to-inmate ratio."  Facilities are designated as either minimum, low, medium, high, or administrative.
